About
This class covers whatever Platonic dialogues Dr. Shepardson is working on that semester. For Fall 2026, the class focuses on Plato's Meno and Phaedo in their entirety, incorporating discussions of recent secondary literature by Shepardson and other Plato scholars. We will also look at contextualizing passages from Plato's other dialogues. Topics include Plato's epistemology (or theory of knowledge), reincarnation, recollection, myths of the underworld and afterlife, the immortality of the soul, and focus on the following distinctions: reason vs. sense, asceticism vs. hedonism, "common sense" vs. careful philosophic thought, and "philosophic" vs. "popular" virtue.
